Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Assessment

The Star Tribune published an article in the Science/Health section on 12/25/14 about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). FASD is the number one preventable cause of birth defects in the United States.

About 1 in 750 children are born with FASD. About 40,000 kids are born with Alcohol Related Neurodevelopmental Disorders (ARND). We used to call this Fetal Alcohol Effect.

A group of researchers at Temple University are developing a test to identify maternal blood biomarkers that can assess fetal neurodevelopment in the first and second trimester, according to the Star Tribune article. The goal is to determine a child’s needs, if there are any, early to reduce injury while still in utero and to plan focused early intervention for the child.

The Rosenberg Center is available to assess children for FASD and to provide intervention. Contact us at 651-636-4155.
