What are red flags for Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD)?
· Frequently saying “what” or “huh” or asking for repetition.
· Difficulty hearing in noise.
· Easily overwhelmed in noisy environments.
· Difficulty following multi-step directions.
· Difficulty with the musicality (prosody) of voice and speech.
· Reading, spelling and decoding difficulties.
· Difficulties with sequencing words and events.
· Mishearing words.
· Difficulty hearing when the speech signal is not clear.
· Early non-developmental speech errors that are often persistent.
· History of chronic otitis media or neurological insult.
· Confusing words that sound similar. Example: Celery and Salary
· Easily distracted by background noise.
· Hearing threshold testing is within normal limits.
These are just some of the signs you might see in a child with a CAPD. No person will have every symptom. Often symptoms can be grouped into subtypes.
